Topic: First exercise in Sketchbook workshop

I used Fresco by Adobe since I had my iPad and wished to start practicing some of the disciplines in a digital environment. My primary observation after starting the exercise is that the digital environment has a tendency to make me speed up, rather than the slowing down that working on paper produces. Even though I insisted that I would not be aloud to make corrections or delete a layer. But as I progressed and allowed myself to slow down, the line work became more consistent and fluid.

I’m curious to see where this goes. I never thought about warming up, but I can see where it keeps you from focusing on a perfect picture and more on perfecting skills.

Hi Rodney, That is an interesting observation about trying these exercises on the Ipad! I have always struggled to recreate the same level of control and fluidity that I can get on paper, even when using one of those paper textured screen protectors. And for me mentally, something about knowing that I can't erase really helps me to be more deliberate when using pen. But you've inspired me to try these on the Ipad to see if I can build up to the same level of control!

Hi Fran, Drawing like any other exercise can benefit from warming up or stretching! And as an added benefit, the more you do these or similar type of exercises, the better your hand eye coordination becomes so that you can get the exact line that you want to later on when you are actually drawing 👍

I am working to teach myself to draw for dexterity as well as to express myself. I also know this is just an exercise to warm up, but I find myself judging every mark I make and I become frustrated with my results. I know practice will improve my skill, and I know you stated there have to be a lot of painful drawings for every good one. I shouldn’t be discouraged but I find any excuse not to get my sketchbook out. Thank you for the exercise, I am working a few minutes a day to create a habit and improve the marks I’m making.
I never thought a warmup could effect your drawing but now I do I really liked the warmup and I will definitely go back and watch it again next time

Hi Jay, I can definitely relate to the frustration of having results not come out exactly as expected. If you can reframe your focus to enjoying the process rather than perfect mark making it will be much easier to stick with it. Much easier said than done though! And remember these are just for warning up and mindless doodling if you don't know what to draw. The dexterity will slowly come over time so don't worry!

Hi Liam, I am glad you enjoyed the exercises!
