Lesson 2: Blocking in & Basic Values

Instructions and Reference Images

In this video we will begin to block in the drawing and introduce light & dark values. This is a crucial stage - like pouring the foundation of a house - all of our drawing will be built on it, so we will go over it carefully.

Lesson 3: Creating a Hierarchy of Values

Instructions

In this lesson, Justin focuses on creating a strong hierarchy of values, from the darkest darks to the lightest lights. He demonstrates how backgrounds can enhance contrast and explores practical techniques for combining graphite and white charcoal effectively.

Lesson 4: Finalizing Values, Adding Details & Finishing the Drawing

Instructions

In the final video, Justin builds the last layers of value to increase contrast and drama, refining edges and relationships between light and dark. He finishes by using white conté or compressed charcoal to sharpen highlights and enhance impact.
